The Funding Disparity Between Black and White Scientists

Thursday, March 18, 2021 (3:00 PM - 4:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Despite a landmark 2011 study validating the long-held belief that African-American scientists were significantly less likely to receive federal research funding, little headway has been made to address the problem. A new commentary paper in “Cell” by a network of biomedical engineering women faculty spotlights the continued funding disparity that remains “the most insidious barrier to the success of Black faculty”. Several of the co-authors, representing academic institutions from across the U.S., will discuss the underlying issues as well as offer recommendations on what steps must be taken by individual scientists, funding agencies, higher ed institutions, and the private sector, to eliminate disparities.
