Description
Implementing Sustainability and Circular Economy Policies with Changing Political Priorities: Healthcare
Sustainability, Plastics and Packaging Sustainability in healthcare is complex. Physicians and hospital executives are focused on patient care while managing financial pressures and evolving regulations. Biotech and Medtech companies are driving innovation to advance diagnostics and treatments, yet sustainability often remains an afterthought—not due to a lack of intent, but because practical, healthcare-specific solutions that integrate seamlessly into operations are lacking. A major challenge is the absence of measurement and reporting—what is not measured cannot be managed or improved.
This discussion will examine the Commonwealth’s legislative policies on waste reduction, sustainability, and the circular economy, with a focus on plastics and packaging—materials that generate significant waste in healthcare and medtech. Despite their environmental impact, these waste streams are often overlooked due to the absence of standardized tracking, limiting opportunities for reduction and circular solutions. To drive meaningful change, the healthcare industry needs structured, scalable solutions that enable organizations to measure, report, and act on their environmental footprint. By integrating data-driven strategies, circular economy principles, and regulatory-aligned frameworks, the industry can transition from ambition to action—reducing waste, optimizing resource efficiency, and building a sustainable future without compromising innovation, patient care, or financial stability.
