The J&J Innovation Centers, a part of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for a Senior Director, External Innovation Search & Evaluation to be based in Boston. The Senior Director will play an important role in representing Johnson & Johnson Innovation and Global External Innovation unique strategy, encompassing emphasis on external partnership, synergies between J&J’s consumer, medical device and pharmaceutical sectors, which enable J&J to lead the development of new approaches to disease eradication through early detection and interception (“World Without Disease”).

Main Responsibilities:

The Senior Director will support the development of an external early stage (before human POC) innovation pipeline aligned with the strategies of J&J internal business sectors, with primary priority on the pharmaceutical sector. The geographic focus is the East US region, including Boston, North Carolina, Baltimore & Washington DC area, NYC, Chicago, and others.  

The role is focused on the early phase of the “innovation funnel”:  development of relationships with key players in the external innovation ecosystem, identifying external innovation opportunities that align with J&J strategy, conducting initial evaluation, preparing introductory information packages for internal discussion and managing the initial scientific communication and handoff to the Therapeutic Area (TA) and Sector Leads, who are located in the IC and represent internal R&D.  To ensure access to the latest information regarding TA strategy and wish list and close collaboration, the Senior Director will develop strong relationships with key internal R&D leadership and TA and Sector leads. 

This position will report directly to the East North America IC Head.

The Senior Director will closely network and develop relationships with all key stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem across the East US geography: leading Venture Capital firms, accelerators and incubators, startup/biotech companies, non-profit, foundations and government organizations that foster early innovation, as well as academic institutions. He/She will work with other team members in the innovation center to initiate and attend partnering and networking events across the region and take responsibility for large scale screening of opportunities from various innovation networks and sources. 

 The Senior Director will also serve as the focal contact point, responding and following up on unsolicited opportunities in the East US region.

The Senior Director will ensure that all external innovation opportunities presented to the internal teams meet the internal portfolio standards of scientific excellence, that development risks are identifiable, and that mitigation strategies are conceivable.  

 

The Senior Director will work closely with the Strategy and Programs Leader to initiate and implement branding and opportunity sourcing programs. 


The Senior Director will coordinate with the other innovation centers to ensure that opportunities are put in a global context and that the best opportunity of those identified globally is pursued.

In partnership with other Innovation Center colleagues, the Senior Director will contribute to the development and enhancement of processes, templates, and data capture systems utilized by the Innovation Centers to attain the highest professional standards in the execution of duties. They will be accountable to therapeutic areas and the Innovation Centers Leaders for the quality of network and relationships, the flow and quality of opportunities, the efficiency of handoff, alignment with business strategy and coordination of external innovation activities with other Innovation Centers.



Qualifications

Role Requirements:

  • A minimum of an MD or PhD level degree is required. 
  • At least 10 years of highly technical/professional experience is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in Drug Discovery or Drug Development, with a portion of that experience being gained in an industry setting, is required. 
  • Pharmaceutical industry experience is highly preferred. 
  • Experience in participating on scientific due diligence teams is preferred.
  • Must have an entrepreneurial, self-starter mindset and ability to inspire others to partner and collaborate.
  • Established network in the innovation ecosystem in the East US is preferred.
  • Frequent travel and attendance of after-hours business events and dinners will be required.
